It’s really hard to overstate how big The Adam Carolla Show was at the time I was hired. Before then, I appeared regularly on Fox News’ Red Eye, NBC in New York and various talking head shows. I also did my interactive streaming internet show once a week. I had a following and regular supporters I interacted with but it was nothing like the reach of ACS.
I remember waking up early at my parents’ house, the house I moved back into when I left New York, and refreshing twitter at 5 in the morning. The positive responses to my first appearance on the show—an audition—were pouring in. It was intoxicating. I went to the Carolla message boards. They were similarly positive. I’d never experienced anything like it.
Caring too much about what people think can be a tiger by the tail situation though. There are people that say if you’re going to let the positive comments in then you have also let the negative ones in. To me this feels like if you’re going to eat ambrosia you also have to eat cowshit. No thank you. (Also did you know ambrosia has mayonnaise and marshmallows in it?)
That being said I’ve been really lucky to have a positive relationship with my listeners. It was my listeners, at that time viewers, who convinced me to pursue an audition on The Adam Carolla Show.
